Welcome to Mrs Ethelston's CE Primary Academy

Welcome to Mrs Ethelston's CE Primary Academy

We are proud to welcome you to Mrs Ethelston's CE Primary Academy, part of the Acorn Multi Academy Trust.  Situated in the attractive village of Uplyme on the Dorset/ Devon border, we have 184 children in seven classes.  While our site is small, we are fortunate to have the use of our beautiful church and well-equipped village hall.

"Mrs Ethelston’s VA Primary school is a Christian community where the love of God and the uniqueness of each individual as created in the image of God are celebrated.

The school is at the heart of the church and local community. This has a profound impact on the children’s academic, personal and spiritual development as well as their achievement."   SIAMS report June 2013

Our school community works together, striving to give the children the best possible education.  We want the children from Mrs Ethelston's to be proud of their school and themselves.  We want them to become well-rounded, reflective individuals who have an enjoyment of learning, and rise to a challenge.

Ofsted confirm that ,"Pupils' achievement is excellent. They make very good progress from the moment they start in the Foundation Stage.  By the time they leave at the end of Year 6, pupils attain high standards, especially in english, mathematics and science."

This website will give you a flavour of the school and some background information, but the best way to get to know us better is to come and see us!  Please contact the school if you would like any additional information, or to arrange a visit.

Safeguarding Statement

We recognise our moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all pupils. We endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued. We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect and follow our procedures to ensure that children receive effective support, protection and justice. The Senior Designated Officer (SDO) is the Head of School Ms M. Kite. For a copy of the School’s Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy please click on the policies link under the information tab above. The procedures contained in this policy apply to all staff and governors and are consistent with those of the Devon Safeguarding Children Board (DSCB).

e-safety Statement

At Mrs Ethelston's Primary we are committed to the use of computer technologies and recognise the Internet as a valuable tool for learners of all ages. We acknowledge that computers and the internet do have the potential for inappropriate use and access to undesirable material and that we have a duty of care to protect our pupils.

All pupils use computer facilities, including the internet, as an essential part of the curriculum and to support learning opportunities within the school. There are well publicised concerns regarding access to materials on the internet that would be unsuitable for pupils. The school takes reasonable steps to minimise the access to unsuitable material by ensuring supervised usage of the internet alongside a filtered internet service provider which prevents access to specific internet sites.

For more information about e-safety, or any other safeguarding issue, please see the information board by the school office, or use the links below.

Prevent Duty

In July 2015, the Government published advice for Governing bodies, school leaders and school staff. The advice explained what the Prevent Duty means for school and how schools should demonstate compliance with the duty.

The Prevent Duty is part of the school's safeguarding procedures and practices.
The leaflet below has been created on preventing terrorism and radicalisation within our Communities.

Science Morning with Dr Usher

We spent the morning of 14 September doing Science with Dr Usher from Colyton Grammar School.

The children investigated the forces needed to get a rocket really high in the air.  We used Coke and Mentos, Film canisters and Alka-Seltzer and finally air pressure to test our own rocket designs.

Year 6 Residential Trip

Year 6 visited Barton Hall for three days and took part in a variety of activities including abseiling, archery and quad biking. The children all had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed the new experiences.

What a Knight!

The Key Stage 2 production based (very loosely) on the Camelot stories has been a great success with some fantastic comic performances from the children in Herons and Swallows.  Many thanks to all the parent helpers who support us in producing a show like this and also the long hours put in by the teaching staff to make it such a success.  However, most of all,  a well done to all the children who were fantastic singers, dancers and actors learning large amounts of lines in some cases.  We have a huge wealth of talent here at Mrs Ethelston’s!
