The Year 4s at Mrs Ethelston’s and St Andrew’s Schools spent three wonderful days at Hooke Court (www.hookecourt.co.uk). We followed a busy and inspirational programme led by professional outdoor pursuit leaders.  The main focus for the three days was on teambuilding and outdoor survival skills. Having arrived by coach on Wednesday, we were faced with our first challenge: putting on our own duvet covers!  The afternoon was spent with team building activities leading to ‘Bridging the Moat’ where the children winched a heavy parcel across the moat.

We spent all day in the woods on Thursday, building our tribal kingdoms. The children were split into two groups; each group built a den big enough to house everybody, they voted for their chief, agreed on a tribal name and found a suitable tribal cry. In the afternoon we enjoyed games and songs by the campfire and had a fantastic time together.

Thursday night we went for a night walk in the surrounding woods. Here we listened to the night time sounds of nocturnal animals and heard owls hooting and birds settling in the treetops. We went into the deep woods and were very pleased to have our torches with us. We were able to shine on the path ahead and also to check that after all, there were no spooky monsters.

During our last morning we finished our time at Hooke Court with teambuilding activities. Moving people on a plank trying not to fall off proved quite a challenge!

The children did us proud. They ate well (the food was amazing!), slept well and knew how to conduct themselves in a positive way. It was great to see how many new friendships were made over such a short time. Well done to all our Year 4s.
